  1. My 18-month-old son has several of the Melissa & Doug chunky puzzles. They are cute with big brightly colored pieces. My son is still a little young to work the puzzles by himself (they are labeled for age 2 and up) but you can still use the pieces to help him learn the names of things. My only quibble would be this is labeled an insects puzzle but spiders and centipedes are not insects (spiders have 8 legs; centipedes have 30 or more legs; insects have 6 legs). Also I’m not sure which insect the piece in the lower right corner is supposed to be. These are minor complaints–I would still recommend the puzzle for kids who like bugs.

I was so excited to get this puzzle for my little ones. Unfortunately, the item description is misleading. The puzzle looks nice (before the kids get to it) and the chunky pieces were a perfect size! However, this puzzle is NOT hand painted. The puzzle pieces are just faced with a sticker, that easily comes off (in pieces!). That is not the quality I was expecting, especially from Melissa and Doug. I’ve had the puzzle for 2 months now, and 2 or 3 of the pieces have the stickers mostly peeled off. Very disappointed.

This is a very chunky puzzle. The pieces are quite thick. Easy for little hands to manipulate. My daughter was about 10 months old wehn we got this, leaving me to think that the age rating could be lowered from 2+ down to 9 months.

  4. I was looking for this puzzle in particular for my little girl since it is the “girliest” one M&D have in the chunky puzzles. It is very cute and functional, but the sides and backs of the pieces are not painted like the other chunky puzzles I have. The particleboard is left raw and of course, goes straight into our 12-month olds mouth, so it is beginning to puff up in some spots. I expected better from Melissa and Doug as I have many of their other toys and love them. Otherwise, it’s a good puzzle, just like the other chunky puzzles my older son loved so much.

My son really likes to play with the big chunky pieces in this puzzle. However, it has already started to chip paint, exposing the unfinished wood below. I feel like it should be more durable.
